synopsis

From the moment she saw Shawn Scarlett perform at a school talent show, Kit Larson has loved two things: the guitar, and the gorgeous, green-eyed boy who inspired her to play. But one careless night in high school shatters her hope of ever being more than a notch on his bedpost.

Six years, two bands, and one mostly-mended heart later, Kit’s about to make her rock star dreams a reality as the new guitarist for Shawn’s band, The Last Ones to Know. He may not remember their reckless night together, but Kit has never forgotten… and she’s determined to make him eat his heart out.

The release of their new album means a month cooped up on a tour bus, sleeping inches away from the ridiculously sexy musician she’s never quite gotten over. And as Kit gets to know the real Shawn—not Shawn Scarlett, the rock god, the player—their attraction becomes too hot to resist. But the past is paved with secrets, and when they finally surface, Kit could lose everything: the band, the music, her dreams… and Shawn.

my thoughts

Those of you that follow this blog know how much I love a good second-chance romance type of book, and Chaos fit this trope perfectly. Kit lost her virginity when she was 15 to her crush Shawn. The only problem is he didn’t really remember her. He sort of gave her the classic ‘I’ll call you’ line and then promptly forgot about it. Kit was devastated. Fast forward years later, Kit is about to audition as the new rhythm guitarist for The Last Ones to Know, which happens to be Shawn’s band. Because of her bad experience and embarrassment over what happened with Shawn when she was 15, Kit pretended not to know him and vice versa.

There are a lot of things that I liked about this book. One, I really liked Kit. Sure she acts immature at times and she doesn’t really know how to handle her emotions sometimes, but she’s so passionate about her music and makes no compromises for it and I loved that. Also, I give her pass for her immaturity because of her passionate personality and also because she’s still young. I loved her relationship with Kale and her brothers. And I liked that their relationship is a bit antagonistic at times. It perfectly fits their whole family dynamic thing going on.

I also enjoyed the band. I liked they seem to get it together and they were loyal to each other. And aside from liking Shawn, which is a given, I absolutely adored Mike. His book is up next and oh my gosh, I’m so excited to read his story. Anyway, I liked how the band was characterized throughout the book. I was expecting over-the-top ‘we’re a rock band’ cliché but fortunately, Ms. Shaw didn’t go that route.

Now, my two gripes were the first part as a bit slow for me and that I never really got to know Shawn more. As in Shawn in his own words or mind instead of just Shawn as Kit saw him. Don’t get me wrong. He got the whole brooding rock star down to pat but I wanted more. I never fully connected with him. I wanted to see more or hear more about what he thought of Kit. Thankfully, we do get his thoughts in the epilogue which was the perfect set up for Mike’s story.

Overall, this was an enjoyable chaotic ride. Definitely recommend this book for those who are looking for a light and sweet rock star themed romance read.
