I was told that dreams were our heart’s desires. My nightmares, however, became my obsession.
His name is Michael Crist.
My boyfriend’s older brother is like that scary movie that you peek through your hand to watch. He is handsome, strong, and completely terrifying. The star of his college’s basketball team and now gone pro, he’s more concerned with the dirt on his shoe than me.
But I noticed him.
I saw him. I heard him. The things that he did, and the deeds that he hid…For years, I bit my nails, unable to look away.
Now, I’ve graduated high school and moved on to college, but I haven’t stopped watching Michael. He’s bad, and the dirt I’ve seen isn’t content to stay in my head anymore.
Because he’s finally noticed me.
Her name is Erika Fane, but everyone calls her Rika.
My brother’s girlfriend grew up hanging around my house and is always at our dinner table. She looks down when I enter a room and stills when I am close. I can always feel the fear rolling off of her, and while I haven’t had her body, I know that I have her mind. That’s all I really want anyway.
Until my brother leaves for the military, and I find Rika alone at college.
In my city.
The opportunity is too good to be true as well as the timing. Because you see, three years ago she put a few of my high school friends in prison, and now they’re out.
We’ve waited. We’ve been patient. And now every last one of her nightmares will come true.
Excuse me while I pick my jaw off the floor. This was quite unexpected from Penelope Douglas, and the one thought in my head while reading this was, “We’re definitely not in Fall Away Lane anymore!”
I’m not quite sure how to describe this book. Yes, it’s dark but not really dark…as in CJ Roberts or Pepper Winters dark. There are certain elements which would classify this as dark but for me, this was more like edgy erotica. Because yes, this is definitely a very erotic book. Not romantic…erotic. This book will make you uncomfortable and hot and bothered the same time.
Corrupt is about Rika Fane and a group of 4 men who are out for revenge because of what happened three years ago. The book takes us back to the past as Rika pines for Michael, who happens to be the ring leader of the Horsemen. It also keeps us up to date with the present as the four young men execute their plans for Rika.
I was on the edge of my seat the entire time while reading this. I was intrigued as to why these guys want revenge. And as the story slowly unravels, we get to know not only Rika but also Micheal, Kai, Will, and Damon. As much I really hated their plans, I could not stop from being intrigued by these guys. Penelope has put in so much complex layers into their characters that I can’t help but be drawn to them.
But my favorite character in this book isn’t Michael or Kai or Will or Damon, but Rika. I loved her vulnerability and strength. I loved that she’s not perfect and that sometimes she doesn’t really understand herself or her feelings. Another standout would be Alex. Loved her unapologetic view about sex and her profession.
This book won’t be for everyone. There’s one particular scene which I know would be a hard limit for some people. Personally, I was fine with it. It wasn’t drawn out and I thought it was something that happened in the moment and it was also effin’ hot like you wouldn’t believe. That scene though was a revelation in terms of Penelope’s skill as writer, and I for one am looking forward to more boundary pushing scenes like that in the future.
