♥ SYNOPSIS ♥

Sometimes you have to wonder if your life is just too good to be true.
Is it real or just an illusion?
Does the man lying beside you really love you like he says he does?
If the answer is yes, you’re meant to live happily ever after.
If the answer is no, you’re living my life…
and nothing will ever be the same.

I know I should walk away, but I can’t.

I’ll take whatever I can get for as long as it lasts.
I know when it’s over…
I’ll never find another man like him.

Let me just say that the title of this book is SPOT ON and that I had a hard time rating this one. This book was definitely emotional in a way that takes hold of you. On the other hand, the characters frustrated me. They tested my patience. But…that was part of its appeal, which is why I gave this 4 stars.

Toxic tells a story about Jeremy McQueen and Phoebe St. Claire. They met years ago during St. Clare’s summer break at the Hamptons. Jeremy is from the wrong side of the tracks and hates the St. Claire family for reasons that weren’t revealed at first and St. Claire lying about her true identity. Their attraction was explosive and the subsequent fallout left Phoebe brokenhearted.

Years later, after ending her engagement with another man, Phoebe and Jeremy meet again under suspicious circumstances. Feelings that she thought were long buried came to fore and it became painfully obvious that she wasn’t over him at all.

Now a successful business man, Jeremy now has everything he ever wanted, except for Phoebe and he wants her. But before they could move forward, they must forgive and forget about the past in order to navigate their present and have a decent future together. But secrets have a way of coming out sooner rather than later and they have to decide to either fight for each other or let those toxic secrets overcome them.

To be honest, I had a hard time getting into this book at first. The writing wasn’t something I was used to. But like I said, this book made me a lot of things. Some pleasant, some not so much. I had to tamp down the urge to throw my kindle against the wall because Jeremy and Phoebe took their freaking time resolving their issues. It was exhausting. But through it all, I was rooting for them. I’m not a huge fan of the whole star-crossed lovers’ trope but Kim Karr did wonderful job with their story as a whole. She weaved a tale of love and heartbreak and second chances.

I didn’t like Phoebe (at first) as much as I liked Jeremy. I couldn’t connect to her but she grew on me. Her flaws, her doubts, her weaknesses made her interesting to me. She messed up big time—they both did but like I said, I was rooting hard for them to get it right.

Now I wish the author gave us more of their past interaction. I didn’t quite get their feelings the first time. I thought that part was very abrupt. It was there and it was over. The reason for their break up was a bit juvenile and the revelations that happened in their past, like her lying about who she is happened off page. The reader got the wind of it after being told what happened after the fact. I wish I had seen it fall apart. I’d rather read more about their past than read about the characters having lots and lots and lots and lots of sex. Don’t get me wrong. Sex is one reason why I read romance but it’s not everything. I wish had less of the sex and more of their past, KWIM?

But other than that, I liked how the story came together, how everything came full circle. Everything got tied together at the end.
So for anyone looking for angst, flawed characters, hot steamy sex and swoon worthy romance, read this book.

I live in Florida with my husband and four kids. I’ve always had a love for reading books and writing. Being an English major in college, I wanted to teach at the college level but that was not to be. I went on to receive an MBA and became a project manager until quitting to raise my family. I currently work part-time with my husband and full-time embracing one of my biggest passions—writing.
