Unexpected is a standalone new adult novel
Alina Lyons is having the worst day of life. Her car is broke down, which in turn made her late for work, which then led to her being fired. Just when she thought things couldn’t get any worst, it did. Alina found her boyfriend in bed with her best friend/room mate.
With no job and no place to stay, Alina turned to the one guy who would understand, Ryan Wilcox. Ryan is her best friend’s boyfriend. He was there to witness Alina’s humiliating betrayal and they’ve bonded because of it.
Unexpected was a wonderfully sweet read. It’s about second chances but more importantly, it’s about blessings in disguise or silver linings.Ryan is the perfect hero for Alina. He was there to pick up the pieces and he supported and encouraged her. I liked the progression from friendship to love. Despite being mutually attracted to each other, I appreciate the fact that they took their own sweet time before taking the plunge so to speak. It leaves readers without a doubt that they’re meant to be and not just using each other as rebound.
My only gripe is that I wish we had seen the dynamics of Alina and her ex’s relationship as well as with her best friend. It would have added to the tension and the angst. Don’t get me wrong, I love sweet, swoony reads but I have to admit I love it even more when there’s a lot of tension and angst. It’s not an indictment of the book as much as it’s a personal preference of mine.
Other than that, this book delivers on the sweet and swoony aspects that we all love in our romance.
P.S. — I can’t leave a review for Unexpected without mentioning the gorgeous cover. I loved it. It perfectly captures the feel of the story.
